Our Services
Postpartum Midwifery Care
Sprout Midwifery offers postpartum and newborn care up to 6 to 8 weeks after birth. Our goal is for all clients to feel safe, supported and empowered in their early journey into parenthood.
Clients may self-register for care, we also accept referrals from health care professionals. Sprout Midwifery provides postpartum care to clients without a designated care provider for pregnancy and birth, as well as clients who do have a primary provider and want additional community-based postpartum support.
In British Columbia, midwifery care is fully covered by MSP and clients have the option of choosing a physician, or midwife for primary care in all aspects of pregnancy, birth, postpartum and newborn care. Midwives are primary care providers and work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals and specialists. Similar to physicians and nurse practitioners, midwives offer complete, holistic and evidence-based care to birthing parents and their newborns.
At Sprout Midwifery, we exclusively provide postpartum and newborn care:
Our visits take place in client homes, virtually, or at the hospital.
We typically offer a prenatal consultation, 2 to 3 visits in the first week postpartum, and then weekly or biweekly visits up to 6 to 8 weeks after baby is born.
Our visits are 30 to 60+ minutes, to give ample time for client care, questions, discussions and planning.
We offer complete clinical and holistic newborn care, including routine screening tests, infant feeding education and support, weight and growth assessments and, education about newborn behaviour and development.
We offer complete clinical and holistic postpartum physical assessments for the birthing parent post physiologic or caesarean birth, mental health and wellbeing assessments and, coaching and education about transitions in early parenthood.
Midwives offer extensive infant feeding support and education to meet individual feeding goals whether breast/chest or formula feeding. We coordinate referrals to infant feeding and lactation specialists when needed.
Midwives coordinate referrals to specialists, such as paediatricians or obstetricians if complications arise.
We offer reproductive health education, screening and initial birth control options and prescriptions at the end of our care.
Our goal is to provide all clients with safe, inclusive and trauma informed care for all types of families and backgrounds at home or hospital.
We remain on call 24/7 for any emergencies that come up from after the birth through to the end of client care.
As spaces are limited, we encourage clients to register for care before baby is born for complete postpartum care from birth.
Alternatively, we accept health professional referrals for individual prenatal and postpartum consults.
We transfer care back to the client’s primary care provider, or help connect clients with a healthcare team when our care is complete.
Pre and Postnatal Consults
Midwives can also offer prenatal or postpartum visits for MSP covered consultative services with a referral from a health care professional for clients wanting or needing additional support; or families desiring midwifery care at more than 2 to 4 weeks postpartum.
Sprout Midwifery gratefully accepts referrals from midwives, registered nurses, physicians, nurse practitioners, and social workers for consultative postpartum midwifery services.
Life Coaching
The transition from pregnancy to becoming a new parent often brings plenty of wonderful, transformative and overwhelming experiences for each individual. These experiences, both positive and challenging can create opportunities for us to open and reflect on our choices, our past experiences and offer insight into where we want to go or what we want to change in our lives. Beyond postpartum midwifery care, we also offer life coaching services, infused with trauma-informed, somatic and attachment theories and approaches. There may be something specific that clients want to uncover, such as a process around their birth experience, exploring approaches to parenting, or adapting to the new demands and changes in a family dynamic. Sometimes the issue is not clear, but what is apparent is that there is more to explore that is unearthed with the initiation into parenthood. Coaching is not counselling, but is often very therapeutic, co-created and guided by client insights and goals.
While life coaching services are not currently covered by BC MSP, coverage may be included in some extended benefits packages.
